Oh, my burning retinas
Commercials for perfume with images of half-naked women. Right.
So..if the perfume is marketed for women, shouldn’t they use half-naked men?
Oh wait, they couldn’t do that because that would be objectification of men,
and that is not acceptable in a patriarchal society. Showing the male body in parts
and pieces serves to portray the idea that perhaps the man isn’t a whole person
who has feelings, and the capacity for original thought. It certainly would
be a shame to set him up for billions of women to ogle, and insinuate that his
worth is based solely on his body. Well, now that I have written it out, I
understand it completely. Objectifying men would diminish their power, and
that could lead to violence upon them, and make all men feel less safe
in the world. That won’t do, pig.

The reason why half-naked women are used is because it creates subliminal association.
Woman in store: Wow, look at that half-naked woman. I wish I looked like that woman, look at her flat tummy.
Woman in store unconsciously: Woman with awesome body uses this perfume.
Woman in store: *buying perfume*
That’s all there is too it. Sex sells (sells even better with subliminal marketing).

Perhaps. However, since not all women rely on their looks to make decisions, it stands to reason that somewhere along the way, a company would choose images that portrayed women as thinking individuals who did not give in to media hype. I recognize that society plays in to this subliminal bullshit, but surely there are still individuals in this world who understand how degrading this type of advertising can be.
